ABOUT BELIZE DISTRICT
BELIZE DISTRICT - Belize City
Belize City is the hub of transportation, center of commerce and culture for the country of Belize. The Museum of Belize and the House of Culture both showcase stunning ancient artifacts and historic memorabilia. The latter is housed in a 19th century building that was once the residence of colonial governors. St. Johns Cathedral is the oldest Anglican cathedral in Central America. For local art, visit The Image Factory. For a cultural performance try the Bliss Center. If you just want to relax, chose one of several cafes situated along the waterway and watch sailboats rock gently near the hand cranked Swing Bridge. On the outskirts of Belize City, Old Belize houses exhibits of Maya artifacts, rainforests, waterfalls, and industry. For a short excursion, get close to jaguars and other native species at the Belize Zoo, or climb the 60 foot Mayan Temple at Altun Ha. Offshore, take a boat to St. George's or Goff's Caye for snorkeling or manatee spotting. There are two airports: Belize municipal in downtown Belize City and Philip Goldson International Airport, 9 miles from the city.
