What can we do in Belize, to make our stay memorable?
My mother told me something years ago, and I have remembered it all my life. You came into this world with nothing of value, and you will leave this world with nothing of value. But there is something you can give to everyone around you (your children, your wife, your husband, your family), that has more value than anything you can buy for them, (that is your time!). It doesn't matter what the balance is in your bank account, how big or fancy that house is that you live in, how important your job may be, or what kind of car you drive. What will be most precious to those around you, is the time you spend with them. We often don't get time during our regular secular activities to do the things we want to. This is why it is important to take the time, and spend it with the ones we love. Of all the things there is to do on this web-site, the following #16 activities listed below (by far), have the most value and they are all absolutely FREE!
#1 - PLAY WITH YOUR KIDS IN THE SAND
Sometimes its the most simplest thing in life, that can be the most rewarding. I would put playing in the sand with your kids, in that category. It doesn't cost any money, kids love it, you can build & destroy, build & destroy, while all laughing at the same time.

#2 - BUILD A SAND CASTLE TOGETHER
A good book, cold drinks, sand shovels, plastic molds, a beach towel, sunscreen and an umbrella. What more could you ask for? Children can play in the sand for hours, as there are a thousand and one things you can do with sand. See what your kids can come up with!

#3 - PLAY CARDS OR A GAME TOGETHER
Playing cards together as a family, can be a bonding experience for everyone. Try something a little different and have your game of cards pool side, with a cool drink or on the beach under an umbrella.

Like any other place, we have starving artists - looking for the opportunity to their claim to fame. Take time to stop and listen to these individuals. You will find the experience both memorable and enjoyable.
Sometimes, they sell their music CD's by the side, sometimes they don't. So it's your call, take a little time, to stop & smell the roses, listen to another person express themself in song. You will find that it uplifts you and stirs you to higher levels of awareness and personal growth. #5 - KISS SOMEONE & SAY "I LOVE YOU"
Any vacation, no matter where you are, can be enhanced by expressing words of appreciation to your spouse or loved one. We've all heard the saying, "sometimes the best things in life, are absolutely free". This is truly one of them.
Take time to express your appreciation to your spouse (or loved one) for all the things they do for you. It will enhance your vacation and help the two of you bond closer together. Discuss what you would like to achieve from your vacation, what you would each like to see, do, eat, and experience. #7 - FISH FROM THE DOCK
Our kids just love fishing right off the dock and this can be some of the best fishing for young adults.
As boats come into shore, and unload - fisherman often clean their catch of the day, right on the dock. This then attracts many other species of fish, looking for a free meal. #8 - SIGHT SEEING ON FOOT
Belize has many things to offer, and sightseeing is one of them. For most of you, you are coming from a place with mass transit systems, buses, light rail trains, highways & interstates, merging lanes & exit lanes. You are not going to find any of that here.
You can walk almost anywhere on the island on foot. You can window shop on foot, find a restaurant on foot, and sight see on foot. You can walk the beaches, see the palm trees, splash in the water and experience the docks - which are bustling with activity of visitors leaving for the day on tours, and fisherman coming in on boats with their "catch of the day". You can photograph all of this, using your own two legs. Walking around sightseeing and taking photographs of the local island culture, and to do this, is absolutely FREE. |
#9 - SWIM IN THE OCEAN or AT YOUR RESORT POOL
I don't know about you, but my kids truly love the pool. They could get lost in it for hours, jumping, swimming, splashing, and laughing. You may find yourself in Belize on a low budget with not many options of things to do.
Take your kids to the ocean or jump into the resort pool. Children love spending time doing things they can't do at home. So unless you have a pool in your backyard or a beach out your front door, spend some time swimming in the ocean or in your resort pool. There is often no extra charge to do this, it's absolutely free. |
#10 - SNORKEL OFF ANY DOCK OR BEACH
Snorkeling off the dock is a great way to introduce young children to the wonderful world of snorkeling.
Located underneath many docks are schools of fish and various forms of marine life. Fish often live here, waiting for their next meal when the fisherman come into clean their "catch of the day". The water around docks is usually fairly shallow and less intimidating for younger children. Each dock is different, so select a few docks to explore with your child. Snorkeling in and around most any dock in Belize is absolutely free. |
#11 - SPEND TIME ON THE BEACH REFLECTING
Sometimes the things in life that are the most precious, are the things that don't cost any money. #12 - HUNT FOR SEASHELLS
Seashells come in many shapes and sizes. The beaches are full of them, only ground up into tiny particles we call sand. Occasionally, we see them washed up onshore, carried by the many tides and currents that bring them to land.
Everyone likes to experience something, and for whatever reason we have found meaning in our lives by collecting small momentos of things that remind us of our past. BICYCLE RENTALS
There are not many cars on the island, for several reasons. Because of this, many use a bicycle to get to and from work and around the island for various reasons. So feel free when you arrive, to ask about bicycle rentals as a cheap means of transportation. One word of caution though, always remember to lock your bike. Because if you don't, it will come up missing.

BUY A NECKLACE FROM "ALEX"
When my wife and I arrived to the island several years ago, and a little local boy named Alex, befriended me. Alex (to the left in this picture), is the one who nicknamed me "Big John". To this day, all the locals now refer to me as "Big John". Unfortunately at this point (my wife lost her identity), and is now known by many on the island as, "Big John's" wife.

TREAT YOUR KIDS TO SOME ICE-CREAM
This maybe the Caribbean, but we still have local vendors dishing up all flavors of ice cream. Try Mango, Pineapple, Passion Fruit to name a few.
Show me a kid who doesn't like something cold and sweet to eat on a hot tropical day. We have several ice cream establishments on the island, selling anything from frozen yogurt, to frozen custards. Some of the flavors, will tease even the most picky pallets. Some of my favorites are rum raisin, mango, and yup, don't hit me, "vanilla". Our kids (just like any others), love running down to the ice cream store, picking up that favorite cone and flavor of the day. So take five seconds, and treat your kid to an ice cream cone in Belize. |
BUY FRESH FRUITS & VEGETABLES
Down here, everything is home grown. No two vegetables look exactly alike. One is small, one is large, one has yellow on it, the other one does not. You don't see the "cookie cutter" produce (all the same size, all the same color) here in Belize that you see in the MEGA shopping centers of the United States, Canada & Great Britain. Most everything is home grown by local farmers, often our neighbors and our friends.
In supporting a local vendor, there is the sense of accomplishment in helping others feed their families. A much different feeling than you get standing in a crowded grocery line with cameras peering on you and counting to see if you have 20 items or less. |
ENJOY AN APPETIZER WITH A FRIEND
There are many simple pleasures in life, one which immediately comes to my mind, is the sharing of an appetizer and a drink with a close friend. Here, you sit with the ocean as your window, a gentle trade wind in your hair, and everything that stresses you out, suddenly disappears. I think that feeling comes with the second drink (smile).

Belikin is the locally brewed beer here in Belize and I will have to tell you......not bad at all. The smaller bottle tends to be a bit short on the amount you get, so order a second one and make that gulp count.
