TOLEDO, BELIZE - Why consider vacationing in the Toledo District?

Picture
Toledo District is the southernmost district in the nation of Belize, with the district capital in the town of Punta Gorda, Belize.  Also in Toledo District are the towns of Monkey River Town and Toledo Settlement, the villages of San Pedro Columbia and Silver Creek, Blue Creek and the ancient Maya ruins of Nim Li Punit, Lubaantun, and Uxbenka.  Blue Creek village is home to the Tumulkin Center of Learning.

PLACENCIA, BELIZE - Why consider vacationing in Placencia?

Picture
As the only place with white sand beaches on mainland Belize, the 16 mile Placencia peninsula is a narrow strip of land with dazzling views of the turquoise Caribbean Sea on one side and on the other, the unruffled waters of the Placencia lagoon with the Maya Mountains in the distance.

A well-established visitor destination with the world's narrowest street running down the center of Placencia Village, the who peninsula including Maya Beach, Seine Bight and the village  itself offer a diverse combination of home-style accommodations as well as modern high end resorts, and vacation rentals.Citrus, banana and aquaculture industries are centered in the Stann Creek district.

This brithplace of Belize's citrus industry, the Stan Creek Valley is home to extensive orange and grapefuit plantations which produce fruit with a high sugar content.  The state of the art factory produces frozen juice concentrate for export and single strength juices and juice blends for the local market.  Off the southern highway, production of the Banana belt of the Stann Creek District began a centruy ago when Belize was still a colony.  Today, local farmers export green bananas to the Caribbean and Europe, timing it so that fruit is ripened by the time they reach market.  And while the sugar industry is no longer evident here, remnants of Belize's first sugar mill can be explored at Serpon Historical site on the Sittee River.  Along the coast, farm raised shrimp in man-made ponds are produced for export and to support the offshore fisheries catch of lobster, sea shrimp. conch and fish.Belizeans refer to the country as "our jewel" and Stann Creek is a true gem, and quite possibly, Belize's best kept secret.
