TIPS ON DINING

Belizean cuisine is a mix of Caribbean, Mexican, African, Spanish, and Mayan culinary influences.  Belize's strongest suit is its seafood.  Fresh fish, lobster, shrimp, and conch are widely available, especially at the beach and island destinations.  Rice and beans are another major staple, served as an accompaniment to almost any main dish.  Often the rice and beans are cooked together, with a touch of coconut milk.

Belizeans tend to eat three meals a day, in similar fashion and hours to North Americans.  Breakfast tends to be served between 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.; lunch between noon and 2:00 p.m.; and dinner between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.  Most meals and dining experiences are quite informal.  In fact, there are only a few restaurants in the entire country that could be considered semi-formal, and none require a jacket or tie, although you could certainly wear them.

RED GINGER - - Fresh Tropical Cuisine

Picture
Red Ginger is located in the Phoenix Resort, in the heart of San Pedro on Middle Street on Ambergris Caye.

BREAKFAST:
LUNCH:
DINNER:           (Reservations are recommended)

With its stylishly minimalist decor and ice-cold air-conditioning, this new restaurant could be in L.A., but it's actually at the Phoenix condos at the north end of San Pedro.  No sea views here - you gaze at deep red and rich cream walls, with brown earth-toned accents, and tropical wild ginger plants in glass vases.

After a ginger or basil mojito, start with ceviche, your choice of grouper, conch, and shrimp.  In season, spring for the grilled lobster tails, pan seared snapper with coconut milk-curry sauce and ginger rice.  The service is top notch above most other place in San Pedro.  Red Ginger is also available for special events such as weddings, rehearsal dinners and private parties.

BLUE WATER GRILL - 226-3347 / Island Caribbean Cuisine

Picture
Blue Water Grill is located in the SunBreeze Hotel, in the heart of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, Belize.

BREAKFAST:   7:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
LUNCH:               11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
DINNER:              6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
                              (Reservations are recommended)

Close to the beach and perpetually busy, this restaurant's seats are on a raised, covered deck with views of the Barrier Reef a few hundred yards away.  The emphasis here is on seafood, and it's consistently well prepared, but there are wood-fired pizza and pastas, and Tuesday and Thursday are sushi nights.

The Blue Water Grill is also available for special events such as weddings, rehearsal dinners, and private parties.

CALIENTE - 226-2170 / Mexican Caribbean Cuisine

Picture
Caliente is located in the Spindrift Hotel, on Front Street, in the heart of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye.

BREAKFAST:
LUNCH:
DINNER:
Come here for a seat where you can catch sea breezes, and dig into spicy Mexican dishes with a Caribbean twist, such as margarita shrimp or caracol al mojo de ajo (grilled conch with garlic sauce).  The local expat community often congregates here for lunch and a few pina coladas or rum and cokes.

WILD MANGO'S - 226-2859 Two thumbs up!
New Wave Latin Caribbean Food

Picture
Wild Mango's is located beach front, across from the Catholic Primary School, in the heart of San Pedro.

BREAKFAST:   Closed
LUNCH:            Opens at 12:00 NOON
DINNER:           Reservations are recommended - during peak or high season

Noted local chef Amy Knox moved here from Victoria House and quickly made Wild Mango's one of the top dinning choices on the island.  Many of the dishes have a Mexican base but with Knox's sophisticated twist.  She calls her cooking "New Wave Latin", Caribbean food infused with spicy Latin flavors from Cuba, Argentina, and Mexico.  It's good enough to have earned her Belize Chef of the Year honors twice.  Try the pulled pork taquitos, or the hug fish burritos (enough for two).  Seating is beach casual, with stools at table on a covered, open air veranda.

We had lunch here the other day, and mom's favorite dish is "Amy's Chef Salad".  Mine is the pulled pork sandwich - both were awesome!

CARAMBA RESTAURANT - 226-4321
Local Mexican & Caribbean Cuisine

Picture
Carambas is located on middle street, in the heart of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye.  You can visit Caramba's by clicking on the link below:

WEBSITE:  www.carambabelize.com

BREAKFAST:   Closed
LUNCH:            11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
DINNER:          4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. (Reservations are recommended during peak & holiday season)

You'll quickly sense the frenetic energy of this noisy and often packed restaurant operated by Rene Reyes, who worked in restaurants in Miami and San Pedro before opening his own spot.  There's nothing very fancy on the menu here - just basics like grilled snapper, fried shrimp, pork chops, Mexican fajitas and burritos - but everything is well prepared, and the service is snappy and enthusiastic.

Lauren, Mom, Karen and I had lunch here today, and boy was it good.   We loved all the decorated palm trees inside the restaurant,.  Mom ordered Fajitas, Karen ordered grilled shrimp, I had a hamburger and Lauren had a  quesadilla.   This is a great little hide-away, off middle street., offering a little something special for everyone in the entire family.

ESTEL's DINE BY THE SEA - Gets two thumbs up in our book!

Picture
Estel's is located beach front on Front Street in the heart of San Pedro, on Ambergris Caye.  While in Belize, this is a must visit place.  The homemade torillia's are out of this world!

BREAKFAST & LUNCH:    Open 6:00 a.m. thru Lunch
DINNER:                              Closed for Dinner

This is San Pedro's best place for a hearty American or Belizean style breakfast of bacon, ham, fried potatoes, fry jacks, black beans and freshly squeezed juice.  Later in the day you can order burgers, Mexican meals, barbecue and seafood dishes.  The little white-and-aqua building is located on the beach, as you might notice the sandy floor and port hole shaped windows.  There's a terrace outside where you can sit under a thatch umbrella and watch pelicans.  This is the place to get lost for hours.  Grab a cold beer and listen to Charlie, as he jams with friends.

FIDO'S COURTYARD - Largest palapa bar on the island

Picture
Fido's is located on Front Street in the heart of San Pedro, on Ambergris Caye

BREAKFAST:    Closed
LUNCH:            11:00 a.m. till 2:00 a.m.
DINNER:           Walk ins accepted

Sooner or later you're sure to end up at Fido's (pronounced) Fee-dough's, sipping something cold and contemplating the sea views, under what the owners claim is the largest thatch palapa in Belize.  If not the largest in Belize, it may at least be the largest on Ambergris Caye.  This casual restaurant and bar is one of San Pedro's most popular places, serving burgers, fish-and-chips, and pizza.  Upstairs is the Rice n' Roll sushi bar.  Fido's is open every day for lunch and dinner, and most nights, depending on the season, there's live music.

SUNSET GRILL - 226-2601 - COME "Feed the Tarpon"

Picture

Sunset Grill is located on the lagoon side, in the heart of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye.  Open 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.  Participate in feeding one of the most entertaining fish Belize has to offer.

BREAKFAST:    Closed
LUNCH:            11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
DINNER:            (Reservations are recommended)

At this award-winning restaurant on the lagoon side of the island, you can watch tarpon swim by, and even feed them, as you enjoy a juicy grilled snapper or cashew pesto linguini.  While you're comfortably ensconced in the thatch-roof dining room set partly over the water, with gorgeous sunset views, tarpon, along with sting rays and eagle rays, swim up to the restaurant and wait to hear a bell, telling them food is on the way.  The tarpon love raw sardines, but you'll be happier with the delicious scallop pasta, named the island's best main dish at the 2009 San Pedro Savor Food Festival, perhaps topped off with a slice of pina colada cheesecake.

ELVI'S KITCHEN - 226-2176 / Friday nights are Mayan Buffet Night

Picture
Elvi's Kitchen is located on Middle Street, right in the heart of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye.

BREAKFAST:
LUNCH:
DINNER:      (Reservations are recommended)

Initially, Eliv Staines sold burgers from the window of her house in 1974.   Soon she added a few tables on the sand under a flamboyant tree.  A quarter century later the sandy floor is still here, and the tree remains (though now lifeless and cut back to fit inside the roof), but everything else is changed.  Enter through massive mahogany doors and you'll be tended to by a staff of a couple of dozen.  The burgers are still good, but for dinner Elvi's now specializes in upmarket dishes such as shrimp in watermelon sauce, or crab claws with garlic butter.  For dessert, don't pass on the coconut pie.

HIDDEN TREASURE

Picture
Hidden Treasure is exactly what the name implies.  This is a quaint little restaurant, hidden back, off any main street, nestled next to a subdivision development.

BREAKFAST:    Closed for breakfast
LUNCH:             Open 12:00 noon for lunch
DINNER:            We suggest making dinner reservations during high season

PINOCCHIO'S RESTAURANT - Italian Pizzaria (Temporarily Closed)

Picture
Pinocchio's is a little pizzaria located just around the corner.  They have inside (air conditioning seating) or you can choose open air dining.  The kids have a playground to play in, while parents enjoy that extra glass of wine or bottle of beer.

All pizza's are brick oven backed and all pasta dishes are made with "homemade" noodles.  You will absolutely love Pinocchio's.

Next time, your're looking for a great place to take your family for dinner - try Pinocchio's.

NERI'S TACOS
HOTTEST LITTLE "LOCAL" BREAKFAST SPOT IN SAN PEDRO

Picture
3 Tacos for $1.00 BZD or (or .50 cents USD)
If you've lived here any length of time, everyone knows, you'll soon be showing up at the Neri's Taco counter.   This is one of those little local places, that unless a friend tells you about it, you'd never know it was here.  Well, we're telling you about it now.   2 Blocks North-west of Tropic Air.
ABSOLUTELY DON'T MISS NERI'S TACOS!!!!

Our family loves them, and traditionally we have Neri's for breakfast every Sunday morning.

PIRATE PIZZA
RRRR....MATEY! What's for dinner?

Picture
The other night, we found ourselves looking for something to eat.  We happened to be driving down middle street in San Pedro and suddenly stumbled upon this place.  Pizza with a Pirates twist!  What a great idea for dinner!

So we ventured inside and ordered us two large cheese pizza's (just so you know), we have kids who won't eat anything spicy. The cheese pizza's were awesome, we would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a good, no I mean GREAT pizza.

Pirate's Pizza is conveniently located in the center of San Pedro and delivers to almost anywhere locally, and yes, I think the delivery guy is a real pirate.
I had a blast taking pictures of these guys while they were making our pizza.
