Glovers Reef Atoll, Belize
One of three atolls offshore of Belize, the waters of Glover's Reef are renowned for their remarkable clarity and the profusion of marine life. Glover's Reef Atoll was named after the 17th century pirate, John Glover, who used the area as a base from which to raid Spanish merchant ships laden with riches plundered from the New World. Nowadays the attractions found within the atoll are a number of islands which visitors can explore marine life, and a great place for sea kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving.
An elliptical shaped reef (20 miles long and 7 miles wide) located almost 40 miles offshore of the Belize mainland, Glover's Reef Atoll is thought to be the richest marine environment in the entire Caribbean Sea. Within Glover's Reef is a shallow lagoon with over 700 patch reefs, which is unsurpassed for snorkeling and sea kayaking. Within a mile of the eastern edge of the atoll the reef wall drops precipitously 2600 feet to the sea floor. The interaction between the open waters of the Caribbean Sea and the sheltered lagoon of the atoll results in diversity and abundance of marine life which is unsurpassed for sea kayaking, snorkeling and scuba diving. The reefs of Belize have long been known as the richest in the Caribbean and Glovers is the best in Belize!
Located on Southwest Caye, at Glovers Reef, the Glovers Reef basecamp is the perfect base to explore the surrounding reefs. The island staff will have a variety of activties planned each day, or you can easily find an empty hammock, a cold drink and a good book for the day, if that sounds appealing. The dining pavillion is the center of all social activities and meals on the island. There is a resource library, games, and always drinks and juices on hand when you are thirsty. Meals will be set throughout the day, but feel free to peek into the kitchen if you need anything throughout the day.
The basecamp is situated on the east side of Southwest Caye, to take advantage of the easterly trade winds that blow off of the open sea. To the back of the camp, shared modern composting toilet system, as well as a central shower building with fresh-water showers to rinse off the day's salt and sand. The accommodations are aligned along the eastern point to take in the ever-present cooling breeze, flowing off the open caribbean. The safari-style tents are simple, clean and comfortable. Each one is appointed with a real wood-frame bed, a 6-inch foam matress, a night-stand with a kerosene lamp, as well as some organizational shelves. The camp is run primarily on solar and wind generated energy, with small generator to supplement or recharge batteries when necessary.
Perched over the water, there is a thatch-roofed hammock palapa, which is perfect spot to read a book and enjoy the breeze. This is a perfect spot for early morning yoga sessions, or a place to get out of the sun in a nice covered environment.
