""Our dream had always been to retire somewhere exotic, warm and friendly. We had never heard of Belize until we saw a “House Hunters International” program on TV.
Ironically weeks later my brother-in-law sent us a picture of himself, sitting on the edge of a pier, surrounded with turquoise blue water, in San Pedro, Belize. It looked liked paradise and my first thought was....it’s not real.
Researching on the internet, lead us to the International Living magazine which rated Belize as one of the best places to retire. They listed the following pluses, climate, housing costs, English speaking, stable government and how friendly the Belizean people are.
Our home is in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. We love Vancouver Island, and plan to return every summer to spend time with our nine grandchildren and kids, exploring the Gulf Islands in our sailboat.
Before we purchased property in Ambergris Caye we spent many years looking for the place we wanted to retire or at least spend our winter months. We travelled to Mexico, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, Hawaii, and had a list of additional places to look.
San Pedro was on the list for December. Two days after arriving in San Pedro we were hooked. The Island was beautiful and so were the people. We didn’t feel alone, or isolated and felt very safe.
RE/MAX Island Real Estate happened to be next door to our hotel and we just decided to drop in for some information. Not only did we find out that we could purchase property at a reasonable price but that we had clear title on our property.
We were living an episode of House Hunters international, where you chose from three properties with Dennis who actually aired an episode on San Pedro. He was able to help us understand how the purchase process worked in Belize, what we needed to do and how we could do it. He was able to answer all our questions and concerns about owning property in a foreign country and even guided us through each step.
We purchased our piece of paradise and made our dream come true.
